Mozart's the Magic Flute is the first opera I ever saw, and thus has a special meaning to me that goes beyond the music. I am the owner of the following versions, all of which are very different and incredible in their own way. Bergman succeeds where others have tried and fail to capture the magic of the opera on film. Besson's production has amazing effects, stunning costumes, and excellent actors. The Sir Colin Davis production at Coventry Garden succeeds in elevating the libretto beyond the trivial, childish nature it usually has and makes it into a coherent, intelligent, and thought-provoking story.

I want to rent a Handel DVD on Netflix, Rod. Agrippina or something. What do you suggest?! The absolute best recommendation you can give!
This one has been getting so many rave reviews that I'm considering buying a copy myself. Only thing that holds me back is that apparently it's not a traditional production. I'm not a big fan of opera productions where what you see is at odds with what you hear.

I've got this DVD, or rather 3 DVDs! The setting, being the time of the British Raj, is not a wholly inappropriate one. Anyway you will find it good entertainment. GC 'himself' is convincing, though the other singers are variable. Some love this production just for Danielle de Niese's sex appeal, which is made good use of here. Maybe too much good us of! The half-hearted Bollywood dance routines could have easily been left out however, but some will get a kick out of such things.
If you've got a few spare Shillings it's certainly worth considering. You don't get many opera productions in their original settings these days.

Ok - thanks for the info. In a moment of weakness I'll probably push that 'add to shopping cart' button.

Thanks, jhar! I have reserved it and eagerly await its arrival.

Have been going at this lately:
Brilliant, both the work and the performance, though I'm finding it's best if I turn the screen off to avoid observing their absurd modern apparel. Will have a full review sometime this week!

Nothing wrong with modern apparel. Haven't you ever seen Shakespeare updated?
