I don't know anyone of the performers listed in the cover, who is the conductor?
What means "Rigoletto story"? Is it the complete original opera, or some kind of rewriting?

It's a live performance al fresco, conducted by Keri Lynn Wilson. They probably called it "Rigoletto Story" to fool unsuspecting opera-phobes. The performance wasn't well-coordinated; sometimes the orchestra tracked the singers; sometimes it was out of sync; and sometimes the orchestra sounded tinny. Rigoletto has an obvious bald wig on that is distracting up close.

As far as the opera, from what I saw, some parts are better than others. I wasn't bowled over with the overture, though it accomplishes its purpose of impending doom, but the dialogue with Sparafucile was compelling. The duet with Gilda was poignant. The duke showed up to lie to Gilda, but by this point, I was disgusted with his character, and I thought the curse of Rigoletto was silly, and the flu kicked in, and I drifted off. Maybe you can spur me on to pick it back up now that I'm not seeing double anymore.

Oh, Mozart I like! You guys helped me get into his operas last year. His characters have real psychological depth.

I just saw Ian Bostridge's film Winterreise. He turns it into a psychodrama. It's compelling watching.

As I type just found time to watch Bartoli as Semele with Christie conducting Orchestra La Scintilla for the first time though I've had the DVD for weeks!

Indeed. This rendition will not be matched, save by that directed by Handel himself in the heavenly realm! Everything aligned on this one. You see what mean about Daniels' voice here? Gorgeous!

Last night another great Glyndebourne Handel DVD with Christie and the OAE, namely Rodelinda. This is the production that brought Andreas Scholl to fame. Set in the silent movie era it's not a 'big set' production but it is very entertaining throughout. Those looking for a recording of Rodelinda will do well to consider this DVD ahead of the CD competition, which is not of a particularly high standard at time of writing. Also the DVD is cheaper than the CD releases!

I bought mine long before the double reissue but that set certainly is a steal.
