So Brahms has reduced the orchestral component for piano four-hands, but retained the choral portion. Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose, though? Not really. Brahms did his a lot with his music so that it could be sold to your average person to play in their homes. He did his with some of his symphonies, he did it with the Triumphlied, and he arranged some of his other orchestral work for piano too. It was a nice way for him to make an easy buck or two off of a successful premier of a work. |

I had an extra $7 somehow this week, so I ordered this after joining yourmusic.com.
Bartok's third concerto has been on my bucket list - things to hear before I die - so since I'm not getting any younger, now was the time to jump in. |

![]() Bartok's third concerto has been on my bucket list - things to hear before I die - so since I'm not getting any younger, now was the time to jump in. Very nice. Boulez and Bartok are a formiddable partnership, so I hope it sounds as good as the coupling suggests. Please tell us which pianist on this release has the most appropriate 'feel'?. |

Bartok 1 and 2 I know but I haven't heard the third. Be sure to flag it up if it's a beauty! |

I didn't realize today was going to have so much discussion on Erik Satie. Must've been because I got some of his piano music this week.
Amazon Link Period piano too. |

I was able to find this for $1 at my CD outlet. ![]() I gave my first copy of this to a promising young clarinet player, hoping to inspire her further into classical music. Instead, she ended up on drugs and playing bass. Come to think of it, I gave an Ernie Watts CD to a promising young tenor sax player, and he ended up alcoholic and playing bass. I've got to stop handing out CDs. There are already too many substance-abusing bass players. |

There are already too many substance-abusing bass players. Must be a character flaw in bass players. I know one who just started up with marijuana again. He actually lives just north of you in Bowling Green. |

My local record store had a sale on used CDs, so for some reason I picked this up. ![]() I'm not a big opera fan, but I am interested in Erich Korngold. So far I'm keeping interested as I listen to it. |

Found this 4CD set for a tenner in a local CD sale. It would have been bad manners not to buy it at that price.

Bought this today whilst it is still at a give away price. I already have 1 and heard 2 more of the 5 disks, but at this price it's worth a speculative purchase for the other two alone... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Piano ... B0001ZM8U4

A few manufacturing problems - disk one had no graphics on the disk, it is blank both sides, and some of the tracks on disk 5 start/stop within the movements as opposed at the beggining/end of them! As for the performances I think only two of the disks are worthy of merit, the other 3 are average at best and utterly detached at worst. Audio quality is an issue too on some of the disks. Fortunately the one disk I was interested in (disk 4) was one of the good ones. but I have the other good one (disk 5) already. Worth considering at this cheap price for the last two disks, the other 3 are disposable. |

As I made my way back from the tobacconist I nipped into the record shop and picked this up... ![]() I promised myself that I would pick up a set of the concertos after I'd battled through Sorin's thread on the subject. And in case my bank manager is reading this, and to cut a long story short, I only had to pay £21. |

I have that album myself and, though not on period instruments, the quality is quite good. Keep in mind concerti 1-4 are arrangements of other composers' works, however! |
