Hello, everyone. I saw your invitation in one of the Compuserve forums and am excited to find this.
I listen to everything from Gregorian chant to the present and am mostly interested in sacred music. The composers who grab me the most so far are Obrecht, Ockeghem, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler, Webern, and Arvo Part, but I'll give ear to anything at least once.
I don't think I'll ever rise through the ranks of contributers, but I'm interested in what everyone has to say.
Brian

Hi Brian, welcome on board!
There are plenty of things to hear at least once in this forum. Check out the Religious Vocal Music Forum first if that is your speciality. _________________ "If I were but of noble birth..." - Rod Corkin

Welcome Brian! I'm partial to a bit of Obrecht and Ockeghem from time to time- when the mood strikes- excellent stuff. Always good to have another music lover here. _________________ "No one achieves frivolity straight off. It is a privilege and an art;" - E M Cioran

| Thanks. I'm looking forward to reading the discussions in the sacred music section.

It may be quieter then usual this weekend as your fellow colonials here (who make all the noise!) will no doubt be getting in the party spirit today and over the weekend. _________________ "If I were but of noble birth..." - Rod Corkin

Thanks. Yeah, those are the composers who can speak to me regardless of if I understand them.

I'll listen to absolutely any genre of music so long as it's quality. I could be wrong but I don't think we've had much posted from the really early music. I'm only a dabbler myself. I suspect smileyman might like some of the really early stuff too. There might be a niche there for you to get some threads going once you're settled in. _________________ "No one achieves frivolity straight off. It is a privilege and an art;" - E M Cioran

That won't include me, because my wife's sick this weekend, so I'm tied to the home. But it will give me a good chance to get caught up. I've already heard some great videos and sound clips.

In comparison to the other topics, no there hasn't been much from early music. I have started a few threads on the subject--one on plainchant in general, one on Perotin, another on Hildegard von Bingen, but I think that's about it. I've been thinking about invading the Secular music forum with a topic on the art of madrigal, but am afraid that the Figaro participants will rise up in wrathful indignation to drive me out.
(And yes, I do love the early music.) _________________ "I learned more from a three minute record, than I ever did in school."

I saw the Hildegard and Perotin threads. Anytime you want to talk about early music, here's at least one set of eyes that will be interested.

I can't add much intellectually to such an early music thread because it's only one of my periphery genres but I'm very happy to listen to the stuff if you post it- so count me in if you have the inclination for a madrigal thread- sounds interesting. _________________ "No one achieves frivolity straight off. Indeed, we've been out celebrating the day we succeeded from you Brits! Today the US History Channel has been playing non-stop documentaries on George Washington and the year 1776, which I have been eating up like free pizza at a lunch meeting!
Welcome aboard, Brian! I think you'll find we have a wide range of music here to choose from, including a few pre-Common-Practice-Period threads. Hope you enjoy your time here! _________________

Greetings from Beethoven's Heiligenstadt, Brian. Welcome to the forum.
You mentioned that you listen to Gregorian chants. I survived 12 years of catholic schools and a part of this time was when the mass was still done in latin. Those were the days when Gregorian chants were still being sung in church and this was when I first heard them. These chants, and some of the baroque and classical music pieces composed for the church, are a few of my favorite things that I still like from my days at catholic school. _________________ "There are far worse things awaiting man than death."

It's good that you see it as a nice memory and not a painful reminder.
The church I spent my childhood in was a good church but boring for a kid, and to this day I don't like organ music, because it brings me back to that bored-to-tears state. (Unless it's a Hammond B3, of course.)
