This morning Beethoven's 'Rasumovsky' quartet's, as performed by the Lindsay's. Very good effort's on the whole (for modern instruments!).

This isn't actually a Mass that Praetorius composed, but a collection of various hymns and masses, arranged by McCreesh into a hypothetical Christmas morning Mass.

McCreesh seems to do this quite a bit - a sort of reconstructive practical scholarship, so to speak. I seem to remember A Venetian Coronation in my collection which adopts a similar approach. Certainly enjoyable to listen to.

Seems like this is his approach anyway. I've seen several recordings of his that appear to be reconstructions or hypotheticals.

Am now listening to Piano Concertos 1-5 as performed by Melvyn Tan on fortepiano with Roger Norrington directing. Just received this yesterday from Amazon, and am looking forward to a thorough perusal of it's contents!

Buy it Here

At a budget price of less than $10!! you can have four discs worth of music.

Seems Beethoven is popular just now...

Ludwig Van Beethoven
Piano Sonatas 8, 14, 23, 26.
Alfred Brendel

Probably not a fashionable version at present...

Of course it is - he plays with musicality, sensitivity, is well recorded, just plays a modern piano. Nowt wrong with that in my book.

I'll check it out eventually. I hope I won't have to post "evidence" that they are better than Music for the Royal Fireworks though. Mr. Green Wink

Now you're really talkin' - I love these performances, permanently on my ipod. Has there been a better partnership in these concertos ? Not in modern versions, and I've heard plenty...

Well at least it's got Beethoven's name on the box, so I should be glad for small mercies. It's not lounging music though Melmoth!

No, but I've made up for that by posting some in the Officer's Mess. Wink

How'd I miss that post? Yes, Perah does fine. I have a set of the Mozart Piano Concerti from him with the English Chamber Orchestra that handle Mozart nicely (though to truly unleash Mozart you need the Gardiner/Bilson/EBS cycle). However, I assert that the best modern performance of the Beethoven Piano Concerti are these:

{Amazon.com - Bernstein/Zimerman/VPO}

Brilliant! A must-have!!!

Rod turns his back for one second and Bernstein and Haitink start flying everywhere! Laughing

Today, listened to:

{Amazon.com}

Sublime.

To celebrate Independance Day, listened to Wellington's Victory from this album:

{Amazon.com}

Note: I don't actually have this CD, but the performance of Wellington's Victory that's on it, which I acquired via the Brilliant Classics Beethoven Edition. The version presented here is very, very theatrical, but then again, it's a very, very theatrical piece to begin with!

Also listened to The Glorious Moment, from the CD:

{Amazon.com}

Happy Fourth of July to all my fellow Americans here at CMM, and God Bless America! Very Happy

Every morning I'm afraid of what I'll see next when I log-in here! Even before I get to Figaro! Laughing

I have the 'Battle' from Marriner's recording here in the 'War Music' topic. They do a very good effort with it, but I doubt it's been downloaded once.

Strange music for Independence day though SE, considering the British won the battle of Vittoria.

PS your new Avatar scares me!

This morning, an early Handel opera 'Rodrigo'. Reasonable effort from Curtis here.

Hear extracts...

I'll keep an eye open for those. Cool

This evening's listening begins with...

Anton Arensky - Violin Concerto Op54
&
Alexander Glazunov - Piano Concerto No1
on Chandos

Good recordings, good performances, a great program that also features Glazunov's Concerto Ballata for Cello and Orchestra. A real treat in every way if you like romantic Russian music.

And continuing with...

Cesar Franck
Piano Music
Stephen Hough on Hyperion

A recording that I find myself constantly coming back to.

J S Bach
Cello Suites
Maurice Gendron on Philips Classics

This is one of my desert island discs- incomparable.
