Thanks for this, Mr. Newman. I have that recording too; Rilling does fine, but I prefer HIP for Bach. I'm looking into this recording: Bach/Koopman/ABO. Anyone heard?

Yes Sorin,

These masses are wonderful and relatively little known. I will post a few others. Of course there are always better versions and worse versions. But those who are not familiar with this music will hear some examples of Bach's marvellous talents.

The opening Kyrie Eleison section has a pleasing feel of radiance about it. Not so sure about the treatment from the Christie Eleison section onwards though, too much of an emotional shift applied there that is not resolved. He should have at least returned to the radiance at the return of the Kyrie Eleison, but that would be the Beethovenian way! Not bad this one, though over longer stretches of time this style becomes hard work for me. My comments elsewhere about old-school Baroque apply here too though.

FYI, though it's not quite Koopman, I just picked up Lutheran Masses, Vol. 1 (The G minor and A major masses) by the Purcell Quartet and guests. I'm only halfway through it, but so far, it's wonderful, if you don't mind one voice to a part.

I gave these another listen, Brian, and I guess I've warmed a bit to the one-part strategy since I gave them their first listen. They still lack power in certain places, though... Will upload samples.

Had a listen to Sorin's track. This is a petty good performance, if anything I think I prefer this with just one voice to the part than most of the other full choruses of Bach's I've heard.
