Announcement: Brahms Shicksalslied "Song of Destiny", op. 54
Posted: smileyman @ Sat Jun 20, 2009 8:45 pm
In the summer of 1868 Brahms was taking a bit of a break. His Requiem was a smashing success the previous year (after a 10 year gestation period), and he decided to spend some time with some friends in Oldenburg. One afternoon he witn with those frineds to the naval port of Wilhelmshafen. There he told Albert Dietrich (his host for the visit), that he had read from the collection of Holderlin and was taken by the poet's Hyperion Shicksalslied. | Announcement: Schubert's song, "Der Tauscher" |
Posted: Dan Leeson @ Thu Jun 18, 2009 8:44 pm
At the age of 16, Schubert wrote a single song of about 25-30 miniutes duration named, "Der Tauscher" or "The Diver." I am going to hear a performance of the song in late July and would like to prepare myself for the experience.
Does anyone on this list have information about the work that they could share with me?
Dan Leeson

Aminta e Fillide was almost certainly composed for, and performed at, the first general meeting of the Arcadians in 1708.
The characteristic...

Announcement: BBC Cardiff Singer of the World

I've just been watching the finale of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, this year won by the Russian soprano Ekaterina Shcherbachenko.
Personally I was routing for the countertenor Yuriy Mynenko, who sung an aria from Giulio Cesare in the semi-final and easily got the biggest audience cheer in the finale with the killer aria from Act 3 of Serse 'Crude furie degl' orridi abissi', but perhaps countertenors are still not quite so accepted by the operatic great and good!
The c...
