As I made my way back from the tobacconist I nipped into the record shop and picked this up...
I promised myself that I would pick up a set of the concertos after I'd battled through Sorin's thread on the subject. And in case my bank manager is reading this, and to cut a long story short, I only had to pay £21.
I'm confident you'll enjoy those performances, Mel. I have that album myself and, though not on period instruments, the quality is quite good. Keep in mind concerti 1-4 are arrangements of other composers' works, however!
I was quite sure you'd more or less approve. I'm sure my own enjoyment of these non-HIP recordings will be somewhat less hampered than your own and I'm sure Murray's smooth, golden tone will do the spirit of the music justice.

I had a few extra dollars Saturday, so I rescued these from a dusty used-CD store.
Oh no: Karajan's Mozart! I cringe even placing the two in the same sentence...
I know what you mean; I have his recording of the Requiem. He does a good job with the horn concertos, though, as far as I can tell. And Dennis Brain is amazing.

Please do. I heard it once, and now it's in my to-sell-on-Ebay stack. Maybe I'm missing something.
Well I read around the reviews online prior to purchase and it appears this is either a recording you'll love or you'll hate, hence I am taking a chance, though not a costly one at the sale price.

Well I'd take it off the Ebay stack if I was you. I think Kozena is very good on the whole, quite lean toned yet strong and dramatic with a wide effective range. I'd like a little more dynamism from Minkowski in places but overall a very enjoyable disk.

All right, then! It's off the Ebay list and back on the CD rotation list.

Borders had a $5-off coupon, so I picked this up for $3.
I haven't figured the pieces out yet, but one warning: I was listening to the 3rd symphony in my car. With its hypnotic rhythms, by the third movement, I was literally fighting to keep awake. So don't listen to this while operating heavy machinery.

On last month's Samuel Barber kick, I chased down his Prayers of Kierkegaard and was completely turned off. By accident, I stumbled on the Prayers of Kierkegaard by Knut Nystedt. This is a beautiful a capella piece.
Amazon only carries it in SACD, making it priced out of my league. Fortunately, Sorin coached me in the art of MP3 downloads. I can handle $8.99. Thanks, Sorin!

I've sure loaded up on CDs the past week, but I found this one for $1, and I'm a sucker for American composers.
Actually, I have the original issue of the CD, which doesn't include the psalms. But there is lovely music here - the organ concerto is worthy of a greater place in the repertoire, in my opinion (contrary to what the reviewer at Amazon.com says) - and it is well-played.

You're welcome, Brian. Enjoy the Nystedt!
We may all be downloading soon, I noticed yesterday the huge Borders store in Oxford St is closing down, that leaves only HMV left in London's main shopping district (and the tiny back-street specialist shop that seems to be recession-proof).

Ugh. I hope not. I've stopped buying downloads for the most part; a CD is so much more stable a format.
